It is easier said than done for the United States to adapt itself to China's development. Lip service is...

Nanjing dance school owner Dai Wensheng probably epitomises the complex love-hate relationship between China and Vietnam better than most in an officially designated friendship year that marks the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between the two neighbours. Dai, 42, first visited Vietnam in September and returned home with a Vietnamese wife. He has since become a marriage broker, leading hundreds of bachelors on trips to find Vietnamese brides, after stories appeared in the mainland media about his shortcut to romance. A couple of weeks ago, I published a column outlining my doubts about the health of China’s banking system in the lead-up to the Agricultural Bank of China (AgBank)’s IPO. Given the lackluster performance of that share launch – despite the considerable political capital Beijing mobilized behind making it a success – it seems I was hardly alone in my concerns. Now some concrete data is starting to emerge regarding the potential size of the problems that may be lurking on China’s bank balance sheets — in particular, the losses that may be incurred from risky stimulus loans made to...

"I'm HIV-positive and I'm gay. Now you may ask questions," says Murong Feng, a 32-year-old AIDS activist speaking recently at an AIDS education event at Zhejiang University in Hangzhou. Some students stand up and applaud. Some go to the stage to embrace him or shake his hand. This is the high point of a series of discussions and activities to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS. . . . . (Snip) . . . . China's Ministry of Health reported in late 2009 that the number of HIV-infected people and those with AIDS has been steadily increasing over the past...

Mark MacKinnon Shoubaozhuang, China — From Monday's Globe and Mail Published on Sunday, Jul. 18, 2010 11:48PM EDT Last updated on Wednesday, Jul. 21, 2010 5:20AM EDT Gated villages in China have for years been symbols of affluence; places where the rich can live in villa-style homes, surrounded by private schools and swimming pools, with fences to keep out those who don’t belong. Now China is gating off low-income villages, where migrant labourers from the countryside (the people who built those expansive villas) live in near squalor. The newly erected fences and nighttime curfews are designed to hold in the...
